Sleep Problems - Wake Up in the Middle of the Night and Feel Like You Can't Move?

Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night, feeling undoubtedly weird? You can't quite put your finger on it, but it is like you can't move, or you are hallucinating? Sometimes it feels like someone is holding your body down and you start to panic, have issue breathing. You might be suffering from sleep paralysis.

Sleep deadness is a sleep disorder. The causes are not fully understood but we will list some of the popular theories later on.

First, let's look at the symptoms of sleep deadness to see if your strange sleep touch fits the fill.

Did you touch one or more of the following in your sleep?:

1. You felt in a dream-like, surreal state. You are not even sure if you are asleep, or awake or somewhere in between.
2. You saw weird hallucinations and/or heard voices in your head. You might have seen or felt the proximity of what appeared to be a ghost or spirit.
3. Something or somebody seemed to be holding you down or crushing you.
4. You could not move. Or perhaps, your limbs were not moving, but your entire body seemed to float away from your bed
5. You got into a panic, or felt anxious and scared. This might be accompanied by a mystery in breathing
6. You might have heard strange noises: anything from buzzing, whooshing, humming, hissing etc
7. You felt an odd, indescribable feeling passing through your body. It felt like a strange electrical current or tingly sensation.

These are all known symptoms of sleep paralysis. Some population believe they are alien visitations or spiritual, ghostly experiences. They have even been represented in art. An episode might last a few short minutes or longer.

Studies have ended that most population will likely touch sleep deadness at least once in their lives.

There isn't a definitive answer to what causes sleep deadness but possible causes include:

1. Greatest fatigue or tiredness. You know when you are really, undoubtedly tired but cannot fall asleep. It is that kind of tired.
2. An irregular sleeping schedule.
3. Sleep deprivation
4. Stress
5. Changes in environment, lifestyle
6. Sleeping face upwards
7. A lucid dream immediately before the attack. A lucid dream is a dream you can remember.
8. Too much alcohol combined with a lack of sleep
9. Narcolepsy. This is a chronic sleep disorder. Often you fall asleep suddenly and at odd times, or you oversleep during the day.
10. A strong emotional state. It might even be a state of happiness such as when you have first fallen in love
11. A throbbing head
12. Cataplexy. This is a rare health in which you touch a sudden loss of muscle tone. It is often triggered by a strong emotion.
13. Hypnagogic hallucination: this is a hallucination you might touch when you are between a waking state and a sleeping state.

For the majority of people, sleep deadness only happens a few times in their whole life and does not need any treatment. For others, getting into a good sleep routine, cutting on the drink and stress allowance can often cure it.
